Uganda's Electric Vehicle Revolution: The Urgent Need for Supporting Infrastructure
Electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer a distant dream on Uganda’s roads. More EVs are quietly appearing in Kampala and beyond than many realize. Public fast chargers have popped up at places like Amber House, City Oil Kamwokya, and Arena Mall. While some still wonder if EVs suit Uganda’s conditions, the facts tell a different story. Fuel prices have soared, and EVs offer a clear cost advantage. Yet, for this revolution to grow, Uganda must build the right infrastructure to support it.

The Rising Cost of Fuel and the EV Advantage
At UGX 6,000 per litre, petrol is expensive. A 300-kilometre trip in a petrol car can cost over UGX 100,000. In contrast, charging an EV for the same distance costs between UGX 15,000 and 20,000. This difference is significant for daily commuters in Kampala who spend UGX 600,000 to 800,000 monthly on fuel. Switching to EVs can save thousands of shillings every month.
The roads remain the same: traffic jams, potholes, and all. But the cost of moving through them changes dramatically with EVs. This price gap is pushing more Ugandans to consider electric vehicles as a practical option, not just a future possibility.
Clean Energy Powers Uganda’s EVs
Uganda’s electricity comes mostly from renewable hydropower, about 90%. This means the energy powering EVs is generated by moving water, a clean and local source. Unlike petrol, which is imported and subject to global price swings and geopolitical risks, Uganda’s hydropower offers a more stable and environmentally friendly fuel source.
This shift reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels and cuts down on pollution. It also aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change. For Uganda, EVs powered by hydropower represent a smart, sustainable choice.
Maintenance Costs Are Lower for EV Owners
Many drivers don’t realize how much money they can save on vehicle maintenance with EVs. Petrol cars require regular oil changes, fuel injector cleaning, diesel particulate filter (DPF) maintenance, and gearbox fluid services. These add up over time and can be costly, especially with Uganda’s fuel quality challenges.
EVs have a much simpler maintenance list:
Tyres
Brakes
Battery health checks
No oil changes or fuel system repairs are needed. This simplicity means fewer trips to the mechanic and lower overall maintenance bills. For many Ugandans, this is a strong incentive to switch to electric.
Challenges with Charging Infrastructure Outside Kampala
Despite the clear benefits, EV adoption faces hurdles. Charging stations are concentrated in Kampala and thin out quickly once you leave the city. This limits the practicality of EVs for people who travel regularly to upcountry areas.
Setting up a home charger is another challenge. It requires a significant upfront investment and reliable electricity supply. Many homes in Uganda are not yet equipped for this, which slows down EV adoption.
Used EV imports are popular but come with risks. Battery health varies widely, and buyers need to verify battery condition carefully. A degraded battery can reduce range and increase replacement costs, which is a common pitfall for first-time EV buyers.
What Uganda Needs to Support EV Growth
To keep the EV momentum going, Uganda must focus on building a supportive infrastructure:
Expand public fast charging stations beyond Kampala to key towns and highways
Promote affordable home charger installation with incentives or financing options
Develop battery testing and certification services to protect buyers of used EVs
Train mechanics and technicians in EV maintenance and repair
Encourage policies that support EV ownership, such as tax breaks or reduced import duties
These steps will make EVs more accessible and practical for more Ugandans, especially those who travel outside the capital.
The Future of Driving in Uganda
For many Kampala drivers, the question of switching to electric is no longer theoretical. The cost savings, cleaner energy, and simpler maintenance make EVs a real option today. But without the right infrastructure, the benefits will remain limited to a few urban areas.
Uganda stands at a crossroads. Supporting EV development with strong infrastructure will unlock economic and environmental benefits for the whole country. It will reduce fuel import bills, cut pollution, and save drivers money.
The electric vehicle revolution is already on Uganda’s roads. Now it’s time to build the roads and chargers that will take it further.
